The heritage of South Staffs remains unique. Originally located in Penn, the club moved to its current home in Tettenhall in 1908 where Harry Vardon, six-time winner of The Open Championship, designed the original layout.

The golf course witnessed the play of many formative leading professionals including Harry Vardon himself, George Duncan, Ted Ray and Sandy Herd.

As golf’s popularity surged in the post-World War II decades, Peter Alliss and Dai Rees played a series of Charity Exhibition Matches here.

In 1971 the club hosted the inaugural Double Diamond Home International Tournament. Played between teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales it featured the likes of Tommy Horton, Christy O’Connor, Bernhard Gallagher and Brian Huggett.

The Carlsberg European Womens’ Championship and a Skins Challenge between Ryder Cup stars Peter Baker, Paul Broadhurst, David Gilford and Ian Woosnam, add to the list of notable professional events.

South Staffs has hosted amateur golf at the highest level including many County events as well as the EGU Champion Club Tournament in 1992, the Senior British Ladies’ Open in both 2003 and 2017, the England v Scotland Boys International in 2008 and the Midland Open Amateur in 2010.

In 1992 the Club celebrated its Centenary and in 2008 the club marked 100 years of golf on its course at Danescourt by launching its Men’s Open Tournament, The Vardon Bowl.
